“I’ll Start Later” Is a Financial Decision

Most people do not actively decide to never invest.

They decide to wait.

Many people wait to start because they think they need more money, more knowledge, better timing or a different version of themselves. They imagine that at some point they will become the kind of person who invests.

But sometimes becoming that person starts with the first small step.

The investment market is famously bad at sending invitations. It will not notify you when it is the perfect time to begin, or until you feel fully organised or have encyclopaedic insight into every facet of investing.

Most people like the idea of investing “one day”, but that “one day” can quietly keep moving out of reach.

That does not mean everyone should invest immediately. If you need your money in the short term, are still building an emergency fund, or are managing high interest debt, investing may not be the right first step. However for money you can afford to leave alone over the long term, getting started can make a lot of sense.

Investing is not about turning £100 into a fortune overnight. It is about giving money the opportunity to grow over time, while accepting that markets will rise and fall along the way.

This is why starting small still matters.

A first investment does not need to be dramatic to be meaningful. Often, the most important part is not the amount, it is the experience. Learning how investing works. Seeing what long term thinking looks like in practice.

Small beginnings build familiarity. They make investing feel less abstract and more tangible. They turn “one day” into today!

Bursary Question

What do you think most often stops young people from starting to invest — lack of money, lack of confidence, lack of knowledge, fear of risk, or something else?

And for you personally, what would make you feel more confident about taking a first step into investing? Explain your answer.
